The Subaru Forester Is Far from Your Average Compact Crossover

Compact crossover SUVs are not usually thought of as off-road machines. But that's what the Subaru Forester is. Unlike most vehicles in its class, the Forester comes with standard all-wheel drive, which ensures that you perform optimally on slippery surfaces. In addition, Port Richey-area residents can appreciate the high ground clearance to avoid damage when traversing the most treacherous of trails, lots of space to haul people and cargo around, and lots of tech to help you keep safe. Port Richey shoppers can choose between the base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring trim levels.

Performance

In addition to having standard all-wheel-drive for optimal all-weather driving performance, the Subaru Forester stands out from other compact crossovers with its flat-four engine, which has a 2.5-liter displacement and produces 182 horsepower. The 2.5-liter flat-four engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for a smooth driving feel. For a vehicle that has its engine power go to all four wheels instead of two like other compact crossovers, the Forester is comparatively good on fuel economy: at 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Although the CVT is gearless, you can go with either the Sport or the Touring to get paddle shifters and simulate a manual gear-shifting experience.

Interior

A five-seater, the Subaru Forester offers 35.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which is one of the largest in its class. You can even fold down the rear seats to expand it to 76.1 cubic feet. The Premium gains a leather-wrapped steering wheel, front-seat power adjustability, and driver-side power adjustability. Leather upholstery appears at the Limited trim level, and the Touring stands alone with rear-seat and steering-wheel heating and front-passenger-seat power adjustability. The aptly named Sport stands out with racing-style upholstery and orange contrast stitching.

Comfort and Convenience

Spring Hill customers of the Subaru Forester should expect to be greeted with a Starlink multimedia system for infotainment integration. Starlink includes a four-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo system with HD Radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, two USB ports and an audio jack, and trial subscriptions to SiriusXM Radio and SiriusXM Travel Link, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen. The Premium gains keyless access, push-button engine start, two additional speakers, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. At the Sport trim level, Subaru adds a pair of charging-only USB ports in the rear. The Limited trim gains a dual-zone automatic climate control system, an 8-inch touchscreen (instead of the 6.5-inch), and a power liftgate. Only the Touring has a SiriusXM Traffic trial subscription, a voice-activated navigation system, and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Safety

For driver assistance, the Subaru Forester relies on the EyeSight suite of driver-assistance features. Such features include adaptive cruise control to keep you at a safe distance from vehicles in front of you, pre-collision braking and throttle management to help prevent front-end crashes, lane departure warning and lane centering assist to keep you on your lane of travel, and sway warning to assist the vehicle dynamics control system in keeping the vehicle stable. Also present are a rearview camera for monitoring what's behind you when reversing, traction control to keep your tires planted on the driving surface, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake override and assist for ultimate stopping ability, and LED daytime running lamps to make the vehicle more visible to others. There's a seven-airbag system for restraint and cushioning during a collision. Holiday, FL drivers who want more driver assistance, there's at least the Sport, which gains blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, automatic high-beam technology, and lane change assist. Only the Touring gets a distraction mitigation system named DriverFocus, as well as reverse automatic braking.
